In last week’s issue, we covered what you don’t need for your design files to be great. If you haven’t seen it, I encourage you to check it out first.

Keeping up with the latest Figma features, and building the most clever components with fancy effects will only get you this far. Even as the most UI-focused designer, you should know that you’ve got bigger fish to fry.

So what is the secret source of a great design file? There is none. And even if there is, it would largely depend on many factors. Still, here are a few rules of thumb that should prove generally useful:
